Two new acquisitions - copies of the historical documents of the Chefoo Convention (aka the Treaty of Yantai) and its supplementary - have gone on show as part of an exhibition at the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, which looks back at the history of the city since it was opened as a treaty port in 1891. The exhibition runs until April 1.
The two documents are powerful evidence of Chongqing's opening to British trade, which prompted a significant transformation of the city in the late 19th century. They were kindly donated by Zhou Yong, director of the Chongqing History Research Association, who had searched for the precious documents for 40 years before he found them in the National Archives in the United Kingdom in 2018 and was permitted to make copies to bring back to China.
