Located on the banks of the APeng River (the largest tributary of the Wujiang), the 4.8 square kilometer Zhuoshui Scenic Area is an important part of the APeng River National Wetland Park. It features beautiful waterscapes composed from a network of multiple rivers, including a subterranean stream flowing from the karst caves.
One of the most celebrated tourist attractions in the scenic area, Zhuoshui Ancient Town is a national 4A-level scenic spot that integrates ethnic Tujia stilted buildings, water transportation wharfs, and business trade fairs.
It is one of the most famous ancient towns in southeast Chongqing and boasts the city’s typical form of old streets with a relatively intact layout of alleys. It not only shows differences from other city’s historical blocks but also combines Ba (the historical Ba culture originated in and influenced regions in Southwest China) as well as ethnic Tujia and Han traditions. The culture of wharfs, business, and town are intertwined in this ancient town.
With a total length of 658 meters, the Sheltered Bridge is the world’s longest gallery bridge. Constructed and restored in different periods of time, it is an amazing structure that fuses traditional and modern as well as Chinese and European architectural styles with Eastern and Western architectural aesthetics. The elegantly poised bridge is a brand-new structural mode complementing the traditional wooden covered bridge with glued wood panels over a steel frame, a new exploration in architecture.
