Hechi's mulberry planting area increased by 24,800 mu (1,653 hectares) to 931,200 mu in 2020, meaning it has now had the largest such area of any part of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region for 15 consecutive years.
Yizhou district in Hechi, the core area for silkworm production, is known as "the county of sericulture in China" and "the high-quality cocoon silk production base in China". The district's mulberry planting area and silkworm cocoon production volumes have been leading all county-level areas in China for 16 consecutive years.
The district has given full play to its natural resources to develop its cocoon silk industry.
"In recent years, Yizhou has devoted great efforts in attracting investment, improving techniques and optimizing services, and the district is now home to 17 cocoon silk processing companies above designated size and most of them are local private companies," said Pan Guangjun, director of the Hechi municipal bureau of agriculture and rural affairs.
Guangxi Yizhou Hongji Silk Cocoon Co Ltd is one of the leading companies in Yizhou. It integrates various businesses such as silkworm cocoon acquisition, processing, production and marketing.
The company has been recognized as a demonstration base for exported agricultural products in Guangxi in 2020, becoming the first regional export demonstration base in the city, officials from Hechi Customs announced on Feb 7.
More than 30 kinds of silkworm products have been exported to over 10 countries and regions in Asia and Europe such as Japan, India, Italy and Romania, with an overall exported volume of around 300 million yuan ($46.51 million) in 2020. The figure in 2016 was only around 11 million yuan.
