Workers harvested reed in the frozen Shahu Lake, a national 5A-level scenic spot in Shizuishan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, in early January, to help the plant regrow in spring.
Though the ice layer was as thick as 30 to 35 centimeters, piles of yellow reed still stood on it in cold wind. The reed on shallow wetland area can be cut by machines but the central area in the lake needs human labor. Locals have joined the work in severe winter for decades.
