Founded in 1985 as the Beijing Aviation Museum, the Air and Space Museum of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA, or Beihang) grew out of the university’s structural exhibition room and aircraft hangar.

After nearly four years of construction and expansion of the collection, the museum, integrating teaching and science popularization, was reopened and renamed in 2012. It is a key part of the national experimental aerospace teaching demonstration center and an important education base for children and teenagers in aerospace science and culture. It is an expression of the spirit of Beihang celebrating patriotism and national defense.

Covering a floor space of 8,300 square meters, it has four areas and more than 300 exhibits, including aviation engines, aerodynamic parts and aircraft manufactured and used by China and foreign countries. With the help of cutting edge technologies, visitors can also learn about the scientific and technical history of aviation.

In addition to serving as a teaching base for core courses on aero engines, aircraft structure, landing gear, missiles, and spacecraft design, the museum also houses more than 30 aircraft and missiles of the United States and the Soviet Union before the founding of the People's Republic of China. A special attraction is the P-61 Model Black Widow, an early fighter equipped with radar for night use in combat.

The museum boasts the leading collection in the domestic aviation industry.
