The city of Quzhou -- in East China's Zhejiang province – was recently conferred with the title of National Civilized City in 2020, according to reports in the local media.

In China, a national civilized city refers to a metropolis with a relatively high level of urban infrastructure and whose residents enjoy a high quality of life.

The title of National Civilized City is the highest honor granted by the Office of the National Steering Committee for Ethical and Cultural Progress, which reflects the overall level of civilization of cities in mainland China.

Local officials said Quzhou has consistently upgraded its infrastructure and facilities.

They said the metropolis boasts a long history, rich culture, pleasant living environment, great location and a strong economy.

Quzhou has a history of more than 6,000 years of civilization, while the city itself is 1,800 years old. It is home to many of Confucius's descendants and its Temple of Southern Confucianism is one of only two Confucian temples in China, as well as being a key cultural heritage site under national protection.

Officials said 860 million yuan ($130.8 million) will be invested to repair the historic buildings of the historic Shuiting Gate, renovate the facades of buildings along the street, among other things.

They said that over the past three years, the net inflow of permanent residents to Quzhou has been continuous, with its urbanization rate rising leading Zhejiang.
