Jiangbei district - one of the key districts of Chongqing city - is located near the Yangtze River and Jialing River, and also near other districts such as Banan, Yuzhong and Yubei. Its highest altitude is 679m and the lowest 152m. It covers an area of 220.77 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over nine streets and three towns, with a permanent population of 903,000 and an urbanization rate of 96 percent.
Jiangbei's economy is developing rapidly. Since the 19th CPC National Congress, the GDP of Jiangbei district has soared from 77.8 billion yuan ($11.63 billion) in 2016 to 124 billion yuan in 2019, giving it an average annual growth rate of more than 8 percent. In 2019, the GDP of Jiangbei district ranked fourth in Chongqing, and the total tax revenue ranked first in the city for three consecutive years.
At present, Jiangbei district is developing its financial industry, with the goal of becoming an inland international financial center and a western financial center. The district has attracted more than 480 financial institutions, and has the most listed companies in the city, whose market value accounts for nearly half of the city's total. In terms of commerce, its characteristic "night-time economy" is booming, and its online and offline commercial sectors are aligning. As for industry, strategic emerging industries such as bio-medicine, new materials, smart industries, and big data have all grown rapidly.
In the first three quarters of 2020, Jiangbei district achieved a GDP of 94.5 billion yuan, an increase of 2.8 percent, putting it first in the urban central district. The tax revenue totaled 16.26 billion yuan, ranking first in the city.
Jiangbei is a model of opening-up. It is at the intersection of the “Belt and Road” and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and boasts both the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity and Chongqing Pilot Free Trade Zone. It is also home to Guanyinqiao Business Area, the first commercial street in southwest China; Cuntan Bonded Port, the country’s first inland bonded port; Guoyuan Port, the country’s largest inland "waterway-railway-road" intermodal transport hub; the Fifth Circuit Court of the Supreme People’s Court; the only center for trademark examination in the west; and the International Business Operation Center of China CITIC Bank.
