5G industry set to boom in Jinqiao

The Shanghai Municipal Government launched a plan to build 26 characteristic industrial parks with areas of 3 to 5 square kilometers earlier this year, and Jinqiao 5G industrial park is one of them.

The park, located in the Jinqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, is now a gathering place for the research and development (R&D) of 5G enterprises, such as Huawei Shanghai Research Institute, SAIC-GM and Nokia Shanghai Bell.

Starting operations in March 2020, the 5G industrial park is expected to inject strong growth momentum into the zone's traditional industries – automobile manufacturing, electronic information, modern household appliances and biological medicine – and promote the upgrading and transformation of Jinqiao's industrial structure.

During the 13th Five Year Plan period (2016-2020), Jinqiao has been beefing up efforts to promote the development of the 5G industry, which have led to the digital and intelligent transformations of the automobile industry, intelligent manufacturing, mobile internet video, industrial internet and the robotics industry.

Jinqiao has also given full support to the construction of 5G infrastructure, and 300 5G base stations will be built this year. Huawei will also offer technological support to enterprises to accelerate the commercialization of 5G R&D results.

To cultivate more high-level 5G talents, Pudong established a 5G talent base in Jinqiao in September, which is the first of its kind in Shanghai. It is expected to promote the integrated development of the 5G industry and education, and bring more professionals into its talent pool.

According to authorities, the 5G talent base will adhere to national development strategies, especially in infrastructure development, and focus on R&D into 5G technology. More specific plans for talent training will be rolled out in an effort to boost the development of new technologies in the 5G industry, and to improve the environment for 5G industrial services.
