H.E.U Kyaw Myo, deputy minister of transportation and communications of Myanmar, said that port cooperation between Myanmar and China has reaped rich results during an interview conducted before the 11th Pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Cooperation Forum.
The year 2020 marks the 70th anniversary of China and Myanmar establishing diplomatic relations.
"Myanmar enjoys unique geographic locations as it is close to the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, possessing an overall coastline of around 2,000 kilometers and nine ports, including the Port of Yangon," Myo noted.
The Port of Yangon is the largest international port in Myanmar, as well as the most important hub for international commerce and logistics as it undertakes 90 percent of the country's port transport and commerce.
An offshore pilot station built by Chinese companies at the Port of Yangon was put into operation in March 2019, making Myanmar the second country in the world owning offshore pilot stations after Thailand.
"The Port of Yangon has forged sister port relationships with Beibu Gulf ports in September 2019, providing favorable conditions for Myanmar to enhance cooperation with ports in the Beibu Gulf and participate in the construction of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor," he said.
Myo also noted that Myanmar welcomes investors from all over the world, including those in China, to invest in the country and carry out further cooperation in areas spanning port construction, transportation infrastructure, as well as the launching of new international shipping routes.
