Feature: Chinese-aided satellite TV project boosts access to information in Malawian communities

BLANTYRE, Malawi -- In 2018, the Malawi government with assistance from the Chinese government launched a satellite television project aimed at reaching 500 rural communities.

The initiative has become one of the best tools for the people living in the rural communities to access important information through different satellite television channels.

At first, Lloyd Mhone, a shop owner in Blantyre had no access to some of the local and international television channels. However, the coming in of this Chinese aided decoders changed the whole situation because he can access over 21 channels at the comfort of his home.

"The coming in of the digital television in our communities has helped many of us to participate in most of the government activities such as elections. In the past, it was very hard for us to access most of the local channels. Now, everything has changed so much that we are not behind with current affairs and world entertainment," said Mhone.

"I would like to thank the Chinese government for their continued support in trying to develop our livelihoods. I believe that they will continue doing the same to other communities in Malawi," said Mhone.

Apart from providing entertainment and information, the satellite television project has also helped "Rural Growth Centres" with cultural and educational information.

For instance, before COVID-19, children learning at Sue Williams Academy in Blantyre had a chance in learning different Chinese cultural studies through their TV at school, according to the owner of the school, this had in impact in daily attendance of students at the school.

During the launch of the project in Malawi, Chinese ambassador to Malawi Liu Hongyang emphasized the importance of the relationship between Malawi and China and that the project reflects this corporation.
