Nico Rene Hansen, 60, a retired police officer from Luxembourg, is living a happy life while helping lift farmers out of poverty in Zhadong village of Yizhou district, Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

In 2013, after Hansen retired early due to injury, he began to travel around the world and finally settled in Yizhou. In March 2018, Hansen and young volunteers from Yizhou district went to Zhadong village to help impoverished households plant passion fruit, starting his new life as a special assistant of Xie Wanju, the village Party chief.

Located in the city's Yizhou district, Zhadong administers 14 smaller villages and comprises 600 villagers from 180 households.

In the past two years, Hansen has often visited impoverished households in Zhadong village to help the villagers harvest mature agricultural products.

He said that he admires the vigorous poverty alleviation efforts that China is carrying out and hopes to obtain a Chinese "green card" to see the moment when China succeeds in eliminating poverty.
