Located to the west of Shanghai, adjacent to the Dianshan Lake scenic area, Zhujiajiao Town is an ancient town with a charm that is typical of China's Jiangnan region (the lower reaches of the Yangtze River).
During the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), there were 16 people there who passed the national-level civil servant recruitment examinations, and more than 40 graduates of the provincial-level examinations, qualifying for the highest level competition in that area. Among them were the scholar Wang Chang (1725-1806), the imperial physician Chen Lianfang (1837-1914), the novelist Lu Shi’e (1878-1944), the newspaper magnate Xi Yufu (1867-1929), and the monk painter Yushi, who all left a rich cultural legacy for the town.
