Zhoushan led Zhejiang province in terms of scientific and technological innovation from January to April, local authorities said.
The city scored 96 points, ranking first in an evaluation of scientific and technological innovation capabilities carried out by the provincial science and technology authorities.
Since the monthly evaluation system was put in place, Zhoushan has topped the ranking for two consecutive times, becoming the only city to score more than 90 points twice.
The strong results come after efforts were made by local authorities to promote innovation-driven development in the city.
The city has rolled out a string of policies and measures to stimulate innovation and bring in a number of scientific and technological projects. A system to cultivate high-tech enterprises has taken shape in Zhoushan.
In the first four months of this year, R&D spending by industrial enterprises above the designated size in Zhoushan reached 739 million yuan ($107.1 million), an uptick of 201.5 percent year-on-year. The amount accounted for 39.4 percent of the city's target this year. Both the growth rate and completion rate placed first in the province.
The city showed strong growth in the number of high-tech companies and high-tech industrial output as well.
Official data show that the added value of high-tech industries in the city soared 104.5 percent year-on-year to 9.619 billion yuan over the four-month period.
