Telecom giant China Unicom launched a 5G base station on June 17 in Gaojiawopu village in Jiti township -- located in Changling county, administered by prefecture-level city of Songyuan in Northeast China's Jilin province -- marking the first to be opened in a village in the province, according to local reports.

Local officials said that Gaojiawopu was previously a poverty-stricken village, with cultivated land of 1,160 hectares and 186 registered impoverished households of 498 people.

The village got rid of poverty at the end of 2018 through developing industries and e-commerce, thanks to targeted poverty alleviation measures, they added.

Officials said the opening of the 5G base station in the village will boost the development of e-commerce and also promote growth of rural tourism.

Experts said that the increasing coverage of 5G network information technology in rural areas will greatly promote the deep integration of the internet with smart agriculture, rural e-commerce and characteristic agriculture.

This will further spark new development momentum and new opportunities for rural development, as well as help local residents become more affluent, they added.
