The inaugural Shanghai Literature and Art Translation Awards is now accepting submissions.

Translators of literary works and performing arts creations that were officially published, performed or broadcast for the first time between Jan 1, 2014 and Dec 31, 2018 are eligible for nomination.

The awards will only accept nominations by institutions instead of individual translators. Publishers, producers or performing arts companies and other relevant authorities and organizations can also submit nominations.

All nominated works must have official copyrights. The awards are now open to translators with registered resident status in Shanghai only.

Artworks translated from Chinese into other languages must be created by Shanghai-based authors in order to qualify for the competition.

The deadline of the submission is Aug 31.

Jointly hosted by the Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Shanghai Writers' Association and the Shanghai Translators' Association, the Shanghai Literature and Art Translation Awards was established under the guidance of the publicity department of the CPC Shanghai Committee.

The triennial event will honor 10 translated literary works and 10 translated performing art projects starting from 2020.

The Awards have been designed to further boost the literary and art translations in Shanghai, create a new platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between China and other countries, according to the opening announcement.

The Awards will be granted to translators who are alive at the time of their nomination. The candidates will be divided into two categories: literature and performing arts, which includes theater productions, films and TV projects.

Five works translated from Chinese into other languages and another five translated from foreign languages into Chinese will be selected for each category.

For the competition of literature awards, only seven languages are eligible: English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Arabic. The performing arts category is open to other official languages used in countries neighboring China too.
