The gymnasium of the Xi'an City Sports Park in Xi'an Economic and Technological Development Zone in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China’s Shaanxi province, recently began renovations and an upgrade for it to take part as a basketball venue in the upcoming 14th National Games in 2021.
It will be also a preparatory venue for the 11th Paralympics and 8th Special Olympics, which will be held in Shaanxi province in 2021.
The gymnasium, built in 1996 to welcome the 4th City Games of China, consists of the main indoor stadium and a training hall.
The main indoor stadium has a construction area of 24,000 square meters, with an international standard basketball court and 12 standard badminton courts; the training hall is an auxiliary warm-up stadium and support hall for the main stadium, with a total construction area of 9,700 sq m.
The upgrading project includes three parts: the overall renovation of the gymnasium, the partial repair of the training hall and the upgrade of surrounding facilities.
Officials said that when finished, it will also meet the requirements of national regulations for medium-sized gymnasiums in terms of building standards, sports being offered, water supply and drainage.
On completion, the gymnasium will be at the Chinese first-class level for competitive sports, mass sports and cultural entertainment.
It will be a modern gymnasium and a national fitness and leisure entertainment venue.
