URUMQI - Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has transmitted a record 20.61 billion kWh of electricity to other regions in the first quarter of 2020, surging 40.8 percent year on year, said the State Grid's Xinjiang branch Tuesday.
The increase is attributed to the launch of an ultra-high voltage power transmission project extending over 3,000 km from Xinjiang to East China's Anhui province, which contributed over 40 percent of the total amount of transmitted electricity, according to the company.
Xinjiang is rich in coal and wind power resources. According to the Xinjiang Electricity Trading Center, Xinjiang now transmits electricity to 19 other Chinese regions, many of them buys electricity from Xinjiang as a form of economic support to the region.
In 2019, the region transmitted over 71.2 billion kWh of electricity to other regions, 1.4 times that of the previous year.
