Guangdong Gaozhou Middle School could trace its origins to a state-run school in the Yuan Dynasty (1304). It has the Nanyue Academy in the Ming Dynasty (1569) as its predecessor. After the reorganization in 1905, it was called Gaojun Middle School, and then it was renamed Guangdong Provincial Ninth Middle School.
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, it has been called Guangdong Gaozhou Middle School.
In 2002, the senior middle department of the school was relocated to the new campus, which has an area of more than 130,000 square meters.
In 1995, it was rated as a first-level school in Guangdong province, and in 2007, it was rated as a state-level model senior middle school in Guangdong province.
