Meiyuan New Village Historical and Cultural Block in Nanjing
南京市梅园新村历史文化街区
Meiyuan New Village, a high-end villa district next to the former Presidential Palace in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province, was once inhabited by a large number of governmental and military officials of the Kuomintang (KTM) Party.
The site witnessed the historic negotiations between the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC) from May 1946 to March 1947, when a delegation headed by Zhou Enlai, then vice-chairman of the CPC Central Military Committee, negotiated with the KMT on the future of the country after the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).
At last, the negotiations broke down and the civil war (1945-49) broke out.
The Meiyuan New Village Memorial Hall has recorded all the historical details of the negotiations. In the hall, there are some scenic memorials including the former site of the CPC delegation, an exhibition hall to display historical materials of the Nanjing Negotiation, a bronze statue of Zhou Enlai and the Zhou Enlai Library.
There are many precious historical relics in the exhibition hall, such as Zhou Enlai's seat during the negotiations, a wax figure of then US Ambassador to China (1946-49) John Leighton Stuart (1876-1962), and some agreements signed by the two parties.
