Shanghai will become the first city in China to hold a variety of film festivals every week in 2020, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Film announced on Dec 25, 2019.
According to the plan issued by the administration, 37 film shows have been scheduled, plus film shows to be held during the annual Shanghai International Film Festival, making it possible to cover the 52 weeks throughout the year.
Films to be shown will include works from all over the world and important periods in film history, as well as works by prestigious filmmakers.
For example, the Hungarian Film Festival, which opened on Jan 4, presented seven classic films by five Hungarian master directors such as Miklós Jancsó and Márta Mészáros.
Some of the film festivals will focus on art-house films and some of them will tell Shanghai's contributions to the country's film development.
Film lovers and residents will get a chance to appreciate classic international works and learn about the history and art of film through the festivals, which will help enrich their cultural lives.
This year marked the 115 anniversary of the birth of Chinese film. Makers of the plan also hope to bring new impetus to the film market through the shows.
Launched by Shanghai Art Film Alliance, the film festivals will gain support from the International Film and TV Center, Film Museum, Film Library and cinemas in Shanghai.
