Chengdu's automotive industry has developed rapidly and has become one of the city's leading industries. Chengdu is an important production base for both domestic and internationally famous companies such as Volkswagen, FAW-Toyota, Geely, Volvo, and Peugeot Citroen, and it has formed a relatively complete vehicle production system and supporting auto parts system. In 2018, the city's vehicle output reached 1.3 million and there are plans to achieve more than 2.1 million vehicles by 2022, building Chengdu into a critical automobile production base in western China and an international automobile city with global influence.
