Guangdong customs intercepts tree pests

Huangpu Customs in south China's Guangdong Province said Tuesday it had intercepted a large number of living and dead pests from a batch of imported logs, which can cause severe damage to native trees.

The pests, Chrysobothris Sexpunctata, were found by customs officers in the bark of the logs that were imported from Suriname, and this is the first time that Guangdong customs has intercepted this kind of pest.

According to the customs, the pest is bright in color and mainly scattered in Guyana in northern South America, which may threaten forest production and the ecological environment.

A single Chrysobothris Sexpunctata can kill a young tree, and a group of them can attack adult trees, said the customs.

The customs has supervised the extermination of the pests, according to relevant regulations.
