The China Women's Development Foundation visited Luocheng Mulao autonomous county in the city of Hechi on Dec 18 to carry out training for the "Jiayou Mulan (Go Mulan)" public welfare program.
Mulan refers to Hua Mulan, a young girl in an ancient Chinese legend who took her father's place in the conscription army.
The program, jointly launched by the China Women's Development Foundation, the Alibaba Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, and Ant Public Welfare in 2018, is a new model for public welfare projects integrating public welfare, poverty alleviation, and online insurance.
It aims to improve the educational and medical environment for impoverished women in national-level poverty stricken counties around the country.
Registered impoverished girls who attend high schools, vocational middle schools or technical secondary schools can receive 1,000 yuan ($142.70) per academic year, while registered women who are diagnosed with cancer can receive a subsidy of 10,000 yuan.
To date, a total of 53,381 registered impoverished women have joined the program.
