In November 2019, the China National Center for Biotechnology Development released a list ranking the competitiveness of biomedical parks, and Zhongguancun National Demonstration Zone came first, leading the country in overall competitiveness.
Zhongguancun National Demonstration Zone has five medical colleges and universities, more than 70 national and municipal research institutions, four international clinical research centers, 67 national drug clinical trial bases, and 732 hospitals, including 54 first-class hospitals. It has cultivated more than 1,956 enterprises and 37 listed companies, gathered a group of industry leaders such as Shuanghe, Tongrentang Chinese Medicine and Lepu Medical, cultivated a group of tech enterprises such as BeiGene, Tinavi and Innocare, and attracted a group of well-known multinational companies such as Merck KGaA, Bayer and Novo Nordisk which have built headquarters and R&D centers.
In 2018, Zhongguancun's biological health industry realized a revenue of 276.15 billion yuan, with a total profit of 32.29 billion yuan. Enterprises have invested 19.19 billion yuan in scientific research and have formed an industrial sector represented by biological medicine, medical devices and health services.
