Established in 2000, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology Museum is China's first museum specializing in costumes and fashion. It is also a cultural research institute, responsible for collection, exhibition, research, and education.
The museum houses more than 100,000 items of costumes and accessories, as well as woven, batik, embroidered textiles exemplifying the traditions of different ethnic groups in China.
In addition, it owns up to 1,000 extremely precious images photographed in the 1920s and 1930s featuring the daily costumes of the Yi, Tibetan, and Qiang ethnic groups.
With 2,000 square meters of floor space, the museum dedicates seven individual galleries to the costumes of ethnic minorities, the Han Chinese people, the Miao ethnic group, metal accessories, woven, brocaded, embroidered and batik textiles, costumes for the Olympic Games, and a photo gallery.
It also houses a multi-purpose auditorium for teaching and academic exchange, as well as a hands-on space where interactive activities are held, introducing the craftsmanship of traditional costumes of ethnic groups in China.
