The Capital Theatre is located at the northern end of the bustling Wangfujing Street in Beijing. Built in 1954, the theater officially became an exclusive performance venue dedicated to the Beijing People's Art Theatre in 1956.
The theater, designed by the famous Chinese architect Lin Leyi (1916-1988), covers an area of nearly 5,000 square meters. Dignified and magnificent, it won an "outstanding architecture creation award" from the Architectural Society of China in the 1950s and was included in the monograph of world architecture history published in the United Kingdom.
The theater has 927 noise-reduction seats arranged across two storeys. The interior design guarantees the best acoustic effects with a first-class sound reinforcement system. The acoustic panels installed on the interior walls transmit the actors’ voices to the audience with great fidelity.
The performance area on the stage covers 517 square meters with a rotating stage, a spiral orchestral pit, electric booms and advanced lighting equipment. All the devices are controlled by computer programming, so as to expand the performance space as needed and ensure an outstanding performance.
