Jianghan Road and Zhongshan Avenue Historical and Cultural Block in Wuhan

Wuhan, a historical and cultural city is composed of three towns - Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang - divided by the Yangtze and Hanjiang rivers, with Hankou and Hanyang on the west bank and Wuchang on the east.
The busiest town of Hankou, in the current Hankou region, had been named as first among the "Four Famous Towns" of Hankou, Zhuxian of Central China's Henan province, Jingdezhen of East China's Jiangxi province, and Foshan of South China's Guangdong province, all noteworthy in the Jiaqing reign (1796-1820) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Jianghan Road and Zhongshan Avenue, occupying the central axis of the area, together form the most renowned neighborhood and the one and only national historical and cultural block in Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei province.
China's longest pedestrian street, the Jianghan Road Walkway extends 1,600 meters and enjoys the reputation of being the "World No 1 Walking Street". It is Wuhan's most famous commercial street with a history of more than 100 years and is considered a "museum of Wuhan's 20th century architecture".

Jianghan Road was historically the border between local Chinese and foreigners. Therefore the area surrounding Hualou Street, Huangpi Street and Daxing Street on its west side is filled with stores, workshops and factories operated by Chinese merchants and businessmen, while banks, companies and shops run by imperialist businessmen, foreign bureaucrats and capitalists occupy the east side of the street.
Jianghan Road is also called a "gold street" similar to Wangfujing Street in Beijing and Nanjing Road in Shanghai. It is one of the five most famous commercial streets in China, together with Wangfujing Street, Nanjing Road, Heping Road in Tianjin and Central Avenue in Harbin.
