Taiyuan University of Technology is a national-level university participating in the "double first-class" key construction project. The university was established through the merger of the former Taiyuan University of Industry and the former Shanxi Institute of Mining and Technology. Through 116 years' development, the university has been built into a technology-oriented high-level educational institution providing multi-disciplinary programs integrated with science and technology. It was included in the national "211 Project" and was enrolled in the first "Excellent Engineer Education Training Plan" initiated by the Ministry of Education. It also participates in the "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Plan for College Students" project. It was recognized for its excellent units, national civilized units and a national civilized campus and was selected as "the First Batch of National Demonstration Universities to Deepen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform", a "National Innovative Talents Training Demonstration Base", and a "National University Teaching Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base". It was awarded "The National May 1 Labor Medal" and named a "National Advanced Basic-level Party Organization".
The university, rooted in Shanxi province, has established a vast platform for talent cultivation. At present, the school covers more than 213 hectares and the building area of the school is 1.49 million square meters. There are 31,154 full-time undergraduates, 5,692 postgraduate students, 736 PhD candidates and 507 foreign students in the school. Currently, the school provides 81 undergraduate majors, 31 first-level master's degree disciplines, 15 first-level doctoral disciplines and 13 post-doctoral degree stations. The school has now fostered three national key disciplines and four national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. Five special majors in the school were selected as national-level construction projects and seven were named practice education centers in the subject of engineering. It has one national key laboratory cultivation base under the co-construction of provincial and ministerial-level educational departments, four key laboratories under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, one key area innovation team under the guidance of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and two innovation teams led by professors involved in the "Cheung Kong Scholars Program". The majors of engineering, materials science, and chemistry have entered the top 1 percent list of ESI global rankings. There are 3,531 full-time faculty members, of whom 2,068 are full-time teachers, two academicians of the Academy of Engineering, and 185 doctoral tutors. Among them, 938 have been entitled as prominent teachers.
The school takes the lead in innovation and has achieved fruitful results in scientific and technological research. Taiyuan University of Technology was honored as a station with a chief scientist two consecutive times in the 973 Research Project. It has cultivated a total of 1,174 national-level projects, including projects of the 863 Plan and the National Key Research and Development Plan. The university has won 483 national and provincial-level awards in science and technology achievements, including 42 China's State Natural Science Awards, a State Award for Inventions and National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Over the years, the university's research achievements have been continuously commercialized into the service industry products and have contributed to regional development, generating more than 10 billion yuan in economic benefits. The university and its achievements have made outstanding contributions to national economic construction and social development.
