Commissioned by Hazzard, a firm form the United States, Davis and Brock designed the Lyceum Theater. Build in 1930, the theater has an Italian Renaissance residential style. The theater has three floors and covers an area of 2,120 square meters.
The interior of the Lyceum Theater is similar to that of the European Opera House. The stage area is nine meters wide, 13 meters deep and 17 meters high. The area is almost equal to that of the audience hall.
There are warehouses on both sides of the stage. The storage and replacement of the scenery are all done by machinery from the warehouse with 25 automatic positioning booms. There are four small makeup rooms backstage, a dressing room in the east and a rehearsal room upstairs. The dome-shaped ceiling is the highlight of the entire auditorium design.
Many elaborate golden lines in the top of the arc converge towards the shining center, reminiscent of European court styles. The auditorium currently has 681 seats, all of which are staggered to the center of the stage in an arch shape.
Most performances that the "Lyceum" presents are classics that have stood the test of time, including traditional Chinese operas classics, dramas and old movies. It is a place reviving the old Shanghai spiritual culture.
