Named after the late Chinese Peking Opera master and theater mogul Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), Mei Lanfang Grand Theater is situated in the southeast corner of Beijing's Guanyuan crossroads, Xicheng District. It works as a modern performance venue where Chinese tradition meets modern art.
Affiliated to the China National Peking Opera Company, the theater covers an area of 13,000 square meters with five floors above ground and two floors underground. Able to accommodate 980 spectators, it is a multifunctional venue for performances, exhibitions, conferences and audio and video recordings.
The decoration and design of the theater blend modernism with traditional Chinese features. The exterior structure reflects modernized design concepts -- its scalloped steel frame-supported roof trusses are fitted with glass-topped roofs, creating a smooth, lively and musical-rich architectural compound. The interior decoration of the theater incorporates the essence of traditional Chinese architectural elements including red pillars and walls inlaid with dozens of golden wooden medallions. The blending features collaborate and reproduce the essence of Peking Opera, which has been inherited and passed down in its 200 years' of history, and also implies the inclusiveness of the Peking Opera and the profound cultural heritage of this historic city.
