Quadruplets, including two boys and two girls, were recently discharged from hospital after about a month of treatment in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
According to a statement released by the Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health Hospital, the mother and all the four babies were healthy when they left the hospital.
"Doctors and medical staff will continue to pay follow-up visits and monitor the health indexes of the babies in the weeks ahead," the statement said.
A local woman surnamed Yang gave birth to the quadruplets via Caesarean section after having been pregnant for 33 weeks and 4 days on Sept 11.
The quadruplets, who weighed 1.99, 1.65, 1.39 and 1.62 kilograms respectively, had to be sent to the natal ICU for treatment when they were born. said Yang Chuanzhong, a senior doctor from the hospital's neonatal department.
"The quadruplets were premature and suffered from low birth weight. Many of their organs were still immature," Yang said. "They might be prone to disease, including infection, dyspnea, abdominal distention, intestinal necrosis and intracranial hemorrhage."
But Yang did not reveal how old the mother is, saying the mother had regularly been to the hospital for obstetric examinations and prenatal consultation before she delivered.
According to statistics, it is rare for a mother to give birth to quadruplets that include two brothers and two sisters.
The rate for such quadruplets is one out of every one million.
