A female livestreamer, surnamed Ding, cheated a young man of more than 4 million yuan ($564,000) after making up a story of wanting to spend the rest of her life with the man, surnamed Lyu. Ding was sentenced to 13 years in prison and fined 1 million yuan in Changchun. When Ding met Lyu in 2013, he fell in love with her. She passed herself off as a fuerdai, or second generation nouveau riche and lied to Lyu that she wanted to commit suicide as her father had accepted betrothal gifts valued at more than 2 million yuan from a rich man, and so she was forced to marry a man she did not love at all. When Lyu gave Ding the money to return the betrothal gifts, Ding asked Lyu to give her another 2 million yuan to purchase a house for their marriage. Lyu then sought police help when Ding blocked his calls after giving her the money. Ding was detained late last year.
