SUSTech students outperform at all levels

While undergraduate enrollment in Guangdong Province is proceeding in an orderly manner, Shenzhen universities are increasingly favored by high school graduates with high scores on the national college entrance exam, commonly known as gaokao, according to the Shenzhen Economic Daily.

This year, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has enrolled 1,064 undergraduates, an increase of 34, or 3.3 percent, from last year. However, the number of students enrolled is much smaller than that of candidates.

Why and How SUSTech so attractive to students?

Innovation and reform have always been the driving force of SUSTech. With a focus on top innovative talent training systems and undergraduate education models, SUSTech has comprehensively promoted teaching reform, revolving around student development, during the process of which we find answers.

SUSTech operates under the philosophy of building a world-class university, rooted in China. Since its inception, SUSTech has stuck to the “undergraduate-oriented” talent training guidelines, by highlighting undergraduate education as its core mission.

At the beginning of process, SUSTech continues to use “6+3+1” comprehensive evaluation admission selection model to select outstanding candidates. SUSTech operates under the credit system, tutorial system, and residential college system. It specializes in personalization, small class, and internationalization of talent cultivation. Through a first-rate talent training system, it fosters a sound personality, a solid foundation, and outstanding capabilities, with high-quality talent providing vision, social responsibility, innovative spirit and practical ability.

In the past few months, SUSTech has used its resources to provide more guidance and support to students’ scientific research and promote the training of innovative talents.

Com Sci students bring home numerous accolades on Software Testing, Verification and Validation (ICST 2019), Software Testing and Analysis (ISSTA 2019) and Software Quality, Reliability, and Security (QRS 2019) of the IEEE International Conference, including championships in all three competitions. SUSTech aeromodelling team won several prizes in electric glider and water-propelled rocket competition of the China Aeromodelling Design Challenge (CADC).

Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) students earned a 1st prize, two 2nd prizes in the 7th National Metallographic Skills Competition for College Students.

SUSTech students from Mechanical & Energy Engineering (MEE), Ocean Science & Engineering (OSE) and Mechanics & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) won 6 prizes in total, four 2nd prizes and two 3rd prizes in the 12th International Underwater Robot Competition.

SUSTech students two 2nd prizes and eight 3rd prizes in the 15th Challenge Cup, the Guangdong University Students’ Extracurricular Academic Scientific and Technological project competition.

Artinx Society won a 3rd prize in the Robomaster Mech Masters (Southern Division) of the 18th National College Robot Competition.

Microelectronics students won a 3rd prize in the 2018-19 Global Finals of the Huawei ICT Contest.

SUSTech students won several awards at the 10th Chinese Mathematics Competitions (CMC).

In the Asia Supercomputer Community (ASC) Student Supercomputer Challenge, one team was selected into the top 20 with a 2nd place finish and has qualified for the final stage while two teams earned second class prizes in the world.

SUSTech team won the gold medal at the 43rd ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) Asian Regional Competition.

SUSTech students won first, second and third prizes in the individual developer test competition of the 2018 National Student Contest of Software Testing.

SUSTech team won numerous awards, including 1st prize in the humanoid robot boxing competition, 2nd prize of humanoid robot balance beam competition, humanoid robot horizontal bar project and humanoid robot fencing project and 3rd prize in competitions for robot fighting (medium group), innovation, humanoid robot single dance, and humanoid robot free combat.

After years of exploration for new undergraduate education, SUSTech developed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) into STREAM by adding Arts and Writing. Through developing a distinctive liberal arts education, cultivating scientists and engineers with critical thinking, imagination and innovative ability, SUSTech students can be armed with well-rounded minds. Here are some examples of students awards in sports, music and other areas.

At 2019 West Lake International Youth Music Festival, Zhang Hanwen and Lou Qing claimed the gold medal for amateur Bel Canto style solos, while He Wenjing was the best amateur popular music soloist.

In the Chinese University Taekwondo Championships, Chen Du fought earn a 3rd place in the 58 kilogram category.

At the 10th Universiade of Guangdong Province, Li Daifeng won the men’s A championship in the Martial Arts Routine Competition, and Zhang Wei and Han Jianzheng won the men’s doubles championship in the table tennis competition.

SUSTech Orienteering Team won 1st prize in the 4th Guangdong University Orienteering Finals

Finance student Zhao Yanchu won the special prize of the 2018 National College English Contest, the first prize of the English Debate and the second prize of the English Speech Contest in the National Finals.

At the 1st China Commercial Aircraft 3D Printing Optimal Structural Design Competition, student team stood out with their topological optimization design plan to win third prize.

Dance team won one championship and a third place in 2018 Guangdong University Students Aerobics Cheerleading Championship.

That’s why SUSTech has made gratifying progress in cultivating talents with global vision, comprehensive quality, and innovative ability.
