The construction of the high-speed railway from Guangzhou to Zhanjiang has been recently approved by China Railway Group and the Guangdong Provincial Government. Preliminary design work is being carried out and the project is expected to start construction as soon as possibly within the year.
The estimated investment of the project is 99.80 billion yuan ($13.93 billion), and the construction period is about five years. After construction is completed, it will take only two hours to travel between Guangzhou and Zhanjiang.
The Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Railway has a design speed of 350 km/h. The new line's route starts from Guangzhou Railway Station and passes through Foshan, Zhaoqing, Yunfu, Yangjiang, and Maoming, ending at Zhanjiang North Station.
After completion, the passenger flow of the Guangzhou-Yangjiang section is expected to reach 32 million, 41 million, and 52 million per year by 2030, 2035, and 2045, which reflect the early, near, and long-term periods. For these periods, 64 pairs, 86 pairs, and 120 pairs of trains will be operated every day respectively. The passenger flow of the Maoming-Zhanjiang section will exceed 25.6 million, 33 million, and 41.8 million per year in those periods with operating trains of 55 pairs, 77 pairs, and 108 pairs per day.
