The First Hospital Affiliated to the Army Medical University (AMU), also known as Southwest Hospital, was established in Nanjing in 1929 and moved to Chongqing in 1941. The hospital has grown into a large 3A-grade comprehensive modern hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research.
The hospital covers more than 20 hectares and has a building area of 360,000 square meters. It has over 2,900 patient beds. The annual patient number of outpatient and emergency departments amounted to 3.82 million in 2016.
Ten departments of the hospital are national key specialties, including burns surgery, hepatological surgery, infectious diseases, neurosurgery, plastic surgery and respiratory medicine. The hospital also has two national key laboratories.
The hospital’s professional staff members, include one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 455 with senior titles, 44 experts enjoying special allowance from the government, one in the Changjiang Scholars program and 209 master’s or doctoral supervisors.
In addition, the hospital is equipped with advanced medical facilities worth 1.5 billion yuan ($212 million) such as a Da Vinci surgical system, PET/CT, dual source spiral CT, ECT, magnetoencephalogram, hyperbaric oxygen chamber and a neuronavigation system.
In recent years, it has conducted 62 scientific research projects under the national 863 and 973 plans, and won 181 awards at provincial or ministerial level.
