Zhanjiang wind power project comes into operation

The first batch of offshore wind turbines of the Zhanjiang Wailuo offshore wind power project was put into use on Aug 15, marking a major breakthrough in the development of offshore wind power in Guangdong province. 

The total installed capacity of the Zhanjiang Wailuo offshore wind power project is 198,000 kilowatts, with a total investment of about 3.75 billion yuan ($532.12 million). As a clean energy project, it is estimated to generate 470 million kWh annually after completion, which will save about 148,100 tons of coal consumption per year, as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 394,000 tons and sulfur dioxide by 54.43 tons. It is of great significance to save energy, reduce emissions, maintain stable economic growth, as well as promote industrial transformation and upgrading.

The project is also the first offshore wind farm in Guangdong to access a 220 kV system, all of which use domestically produced 5 MW-class anti-typhoon wind turbines. The offshore wind farm has started operation of five units in the current period. The total 36 units will come into effect by the end of the year. The total capacity of the wind farm will reach 200,000 kilowatts. In addition, four to five offshore wind farms will be set up in western Guangdong this year.

By 2020, the scale of offshore wind power production in Guangdong province is expected to exceed 2 million kilowatts, which will further improve the energy structure of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as provide more and better clean energy for the reform and development of the region.
