South-Central University for Nationalities, established in 1951, gained its current name in March 2002.
The university covers more than 103 hectares and has a building area of over 1 million square meters. Its library has a collection of more than 6.97 million books and China's first museum of ethnology is located at the university.
The university has 27,000 students, with over 60 percent from 56 Chinese ethnic minorities. It has opened 84 undergraduate majors. Ethnology, chemistry and pharmacy have been listed among national first-class disciplines.
The university has 2,135 staff members, 50.6 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees.
In recent years, it has carried out communication and cooperation with 50 overseas universities.
