Founded in Beijing in September 1958, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was listed as a national key university in 1959, which focuses on cultivating top scientific and technological talents.
At the beginning of 1970, USTC moved to Hefei, the capital of Anhui, and entered a period of rapid development. After 1978, the university adopted a series of educational reforms to accelerate its development, such as setting up the "special classes for gifted young people".
It was also in the first batch of universities to enter the national 211 and 985 projects, and the only university in China which was involved in the National Knowledge Innovation Projects. In 2017, it was selected as a first-class university and class A construction college in the list of double first-class constructions announced by the State, and 11 of its disciplines were selected as first-class construction disciplines.
The university now has five campuses and is building a new campus, which will be completed in 2020. It has 20 colleges and 31 departments, one graduate college, and 12 scientific research institutions at State level. It boasts 28 doctoral degrees in first-tier disciplines, and seven master's degrees in first-tier disciplines.
By December 2018, the university had 2,154 faculty members, including 55 academicians of the two academies, 30 scholars who are listed in the National Ten Thousand Leading Talents Project, 115 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 51 distinguished professors on the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and seven Nationally Distinguished Teachers.
According to data released by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), as of May 2019, 13 of the university's disciplines had entered the top 1 percent of the world's academic institutions, and four disciplines had entered the top one thousand.
Running on the principle of "exchange, openness and international combination", the university has actively promoted international communication and cooperation, establishing cooperative relationships with many colleges, universities and research institutions across the world, including in the United States, Australia, Japan and Singapore.
