The container throughput of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port totaled 13.9 million TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent unit) in the first half of 2019, up 4.7 percent year-on-year, the latest report from the port revealed.
According to the report, the increase in imports and domestic trade has become a major driving force behind the port's growth. Cargo throughput from and to Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean countries has increased 41 percent and 15.8 percent, respectively.
The report also shows that the shipping throughput betweent the port and Belt and Road Initiative countries and regions has accounted for over 40 percent of the total.
The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the world's largest port in cargo tonnage, entered the list of 20 most promising ports in the world of 2018 in an annual report recently issued by the Shanghai International Shipping Institute.
