Set up in 1956, Zhengzhou University (ZZU) was the country's first comprehensive university after the founding of New China in 1949, and was included as one of the universities to enter Project 211 in 1996.
Occupying more than 380 hectares, ZZU has four campuses: the main campus, and the south, north campus and east campuses. By the end of March 2018, the university had more than 54,000 undergraduates, 19,000 graduate students, and nearly 2,000 international students from 91 countries and regions.
ZZU is a comprehensive university covering 12 disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management and art. Its three disciplines: clinical medicine, materials science and engineering, and chemistry were selected as first-class construction disciplines by the State. Six subjects: chemistry, materials science, clinical medicine, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, and biology and biochemistry are listed in the top 1 percent of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global subject rankings, and its ESI academic institution is ranked 910th in the world.
The university has more than 5,700 faculty members, including 11 academicians of the two academies and members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, seven recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, seven distinguished professors on the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 24 scholars who are listed in the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project. Supported by such outstanding talents, ZZU has 30 first-tier disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 59 first-tier disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, and 24 mobile postdoctoral scientific research stations.
At ZZU there are 46 colleges and departments, and 114 undergraduate programs, among which six are national professional comprehensive reform pilot specialties, and 14 are State-level characteristic specialties.
Over the past years, ZZU has actively taken part in implementing major national strategies, and set out an action plan to integrate into the Zheng-Luo-Xin National Innovation Demonstration Area, with the aim of setting up an innovation-driven development system. In the past five years, the university has undertaken 79 scientific research projects and subjects, and 1,231 projects were approved by the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation of China.
At the same time, the university has established cooperative relationships with 205 colleges and universities, and research institutions in 41 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan, and has set up a Confucius Institute in India.
