Free Hainan Opera shows staged at Haikou People's Park

Local Hainan Opera troupes staged a free performance free for residents at Haikou People's Park on July 13, as they have done every weekend over the past 20 years.

The shadow of an old tree, a desk, two chairs, a fairly small carpet, and some sound equipment made up the austere Hainan Opera stage that attracts numerous tourists and residents every weekend. Climaxes at the opera shows are consistently greeted with prolonged applause.

As a representative of Hainan's outstanding culture and one of the four opera types in Lingnan, Hainan Opera has a history of more than 300 years. It is very popular among the elder generation of Hainan people.
