Fujian has been making strides in the development of its digital economy, which has emerged as an important driver behind its rapid economic growth.

In 2018, Fujian's digital economy recorded 1.42 trillion yuan in revenue, ranking it seventh among provinces nationwide, according to a report released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

The figure also indicated a year-on-year growth of 22.39 percent, the second fastest in the country after Guizhou province.

In terms of the electronic information manufacturing industry, industrial clusters for chip and screen manufacturers have formed in the province, with 13 key enterprises earning over 10 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) in annual revenue, local media reported, citing statistics from the Fujian provincial commission of industry and informatization.

The software industry is also quickly gaining ground. Official data shows that the output of the sector in Fujian reached 289.6 billion yuan in 2018, ranking eighth nationwide.

Fuzhou and Xiamen, both major cities in Fujian, were designated national level software cities, making Fujian the only province in China to have two cities with the title.

In 2019, six enterprises from the province were listed among the top 100 enterprises in the country in terms of comprehensive competitiveness in software and information technology services.

Fujian is also home to a robust internet of things sector. Mawei district in Fuzhou was selected by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as one of the four national internet of things industrial bases.

With the rise of big data, construction on Southeast China Big Data Industrial Park is picking up steam. The second phase of the Fujian Provincial Supercomputing Center has been put in use. To date, more than 200 enterprises have settled down in the park with combined capital of over 20 billion yuan.
