Guoluo Tibetan autonomous prefecture is in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Due to the special ecological environment of Guoluo, a variety of medicinal plants thrive in most parts of the prefecture. They include caterpillar fungus (cordyceps sinensis), Chinese rhubarb (rheum officinale), Rhodiola rosea, female ginseng (angelica sinensis) and Sichuan lovage (ligusticum wallichii).
Guoluo caterpillar fungus is mainly distributed throughout shaded slopes, semi-shaded slopes and boscage on the mountain meadows at altitudes from from 4,000 to 4,800 meters. It is vertically and intensively distributed in areas around Animaqin Snow Mountain.
