The air quality of Haikou, capital of Hainan province, ranked first among the 168 cities in China during both June and the first half of 2019, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China.
In June, the average ratio of good air quality days in 337 cities at or above the prefecture level in China was 79.2 percent, down 0.1 percentage point year-on-year. In the first half of 2019, the average ratio of days with good air quality in the whole country was 80.1 percent, a 0.4 percentage point year-on-year increase. In addition, 142 cities had met the environmental air quality standards, 20 cities more compared with the same period last year.
In June, 20 of the 168 key cities, including Haikou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Shenzhen, Lhasa, and Xiamen, had relatively good air quality, and in the first half of 2019, the cities with relatively good air quality were Haikou, Lhasa, Shenzhen, Zhoushan, Huizhou, and Huangshan.
"Haikou will take effective measures to prevent and control atmospheric pollution, thereby consolidating and improving 'Haikou Blue', " said the a member of Haikou's ecology and environment bureau.
Since this year, Haikou has continuously enhanced the mechanism of air pollution control, cracking down on all kinds of illegal activities that harm the atmospheric environment, he added.
"In carrying out the prohibition of straw and garbage incineration in the open air, the government has been making full use of the 12345 platform for supervision and has encouraged citizens to report such unlawful acts on our WeChat platform to continuously improve the air quality in Haikou."
