The condition of Yunnan province's transport infrastructure has been greatly improved since the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period thanks to the support of Ministry of Transport.

Roads

By the end of October 2018, the total length of expressways opened to traffic had reached 5,086 kilometers, and 79 of 129 counties in Yunnan province had been connected by expressways. Among all counties in the province, 125 had been equipped with secondary roads.

The length of roads opened to traffic in rural areas of the province amounted to 199,000 km by the end of October 2018 and all villages in Yunnan had asphalt or concrete roads by the end of 2017.

Among all Yunnan's villages, 90.63 percent can be reached by coaches and 94.38 percent have a postal service. A total of 199 ziptrecks have been renovated, putting an end to the time when people living in remote mountainous areas relied on ziptrecks to get across rivers.

It is expected that by the end of 2020, all counties, cities and districts in Yunnan will be connected by expressways, apart from four counties with fragile ecological environments and complex geological conditions–Fugong county, Gongshan Dulong and Nu autonomous county, Deqin county and Weixi Lisu autonomous county–and the total length of expressways in the province will exceed 10,000 km.

Yunnan province has invested 6.2 billion yuan ($903.33 million) to build or renovate 106 service areas along its expressways.

Railway

Yunnan has been accelerating the development of railway construction. In 2018, about 25 billion yuan was invested in railway construction, turning Yunnan into an international transport hub facing South Asia and Southeast Asia. Five railways crossing the borders with Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and India are under construction.

It is estimated that the total length of railways put into operation will reach 5,000 km in the next five years and the overall length of railways built or under construction will amount to 8,000 km.

Shipping

Yunnan province has six river systems, including Jinsha River, Lancang River and Nanpan River, along with more than 30 lakes. The province has over 8,000 km of riverways that can be developed to take shipping. Over 4,294 km of riverways have been developed to carry shipping in the province. The Lancang-Mekong River is the only river in Asia that runs through six countries.

Airports

Yunnan province has 12 airports – Kunming Changshui International Airport, Lijiang Sanyi International Airport, Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport, Diqing Shangri-La Airport, Dali Airport, Zhaotong Airport, Pu'er Simao Airport, Baoshan Yunrui Airport, Lincang Airport, Wenshan Puzhehei Airport, Tengchong Tuofeng Airport and Dehong Mangshi Airport.
