Chinese player Yu Yangyi beat India's Vidit Gujrathi on the opening day of the Danzhou International Chess Tournament in Danzhou, a city located on southern China's island province of Hainan on Sunday.
Eight players from five countries are competing in the tournament, as former European champion Russian Inarkiev Ernesto also won on Sunday by defeating African champion Amin Bassem from Egypt.
Russia, Hungary, India, Egypt and China sent players to the event, which is scheduled to end on July 7.
The event offers a total of 60,000 U.S. dollars in prize money.
Danzhou city is located in the northwest of Hainan Island. It is known predominantly as a tourist hotspot due to the tropical climate and stunning beaches.
