Hebei province, which surrounds the national capital city of Beijing and adjoins Tianjin Municipality in the east, is an important part of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Collaborative Development Strategy and the Bohai Rim Economic Circle.
After many years of development, the province has formed a comprehensive sea, land and air transport network.
Waterways
Hebei province has a coastline of 487 kilometers, along which are the Qinhuangdao, Tangshan and Huanghua ports.
In 2018, the province invested 4.86 billion yuan ($709 million) in port construction and added 44 million metric tons to its port handling capacity. The total port handling capacity of the province exceeded 1.1 billion tons, ranking second in the country.
The cargo throughput of the province's ports reached 1.16 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.2 percent, while container throughput rose by 13.8 percent over the previous year to 4.26 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).
Highways
In 2018, Hebei province invested 10.1 billion yuan in the construction of common trunk highways, increasing highways by 639 km. With an investment of 8.48 billion yuan, the province completed the construction of 7,005 km of roads in the province's rural areas.
By the end of 2018, the length of highways (rural roads included) in the province totaled 193,000 km, increasing by 0.8 percent year-on-year. The total length of the province's rural roads was 167,000 km.
Expressways
Hebei province constructed 748 km of new expressways in 2018, with an investment of 47.68 billion yuan, ranking first in the country.
By the end of 2018, the total traffic mileage of expressways in the province reached 7,279 km, ranking second in the country.
Railways
With investment of 4.15 billion yuan, the province extended its railways by 77 km in 2018. The total length of the province's railways in operation surpassed 7,000 km, ranking first in the country.
The province's railway freight volume in 2018 reached 430 million tons, with a growth rate of 25.9 percent over the previous year.
According to Hebei's three-year (2018-20) action plan for construction of a modern and comprehensive transport system issued in March 2018, it is expected that by 2020, the total traffic length of the province's railways will reach 8,200 km, while the total length of high-speed railways will exceed 1,700 km.
Subway
By the end of 2018, there was only one subway system in Hebei province, Shijiazhuang Metro, in the province's capital city.
Two subway lines are in operation: the first-stage project of Line 1 and the first phase of Line 3. The total operating mileage reached 30.3 km, with 25 stations.
Airports
There are five civilian airports in Hebei province: Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport, Handan Matou Airport, Tangshan Sannvhe Airport, Qinhuangdao Beidaihe International Airport, and Chengde Puning Airport.
Their passenger throughput totaled 13.91 million in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 17.3 percent, while the cargo throughput rose by 12.4 percent over the previous year to 49,000 tons.
