In a bold initiative, Shenyang’s first ice and snow sports meet will kick off in the summer, in order build up enthusiasm for winter sports – according to information on the upcoming event, released at a news conference in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province on June 26.
Organizers said the event will kick off on July 10, and around 500,000 people are expected to participate in the activities.
Wang Dong, director of the Liaoning winter sports management center, said at the conference that the event will encourage the participation of everyone and will help athletes hone their skills – as well as providing opportunities for Liaoning companies to develop their related businesses.
By starting in the summer, it is hoped the event will attract more participants, Wang said.
During the event, activities to popularize winter sports among teenagers as well as winter sports competitions will be held, and some 10 ice arenas across the province will offer discounts to participants, according to the organizers.
