The 16th China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair (CISMEF) kicked off in Guangzhou on June 24 and Uruguay showcased a range of its specialty products at the event, which runs until June 27.
It is the first time that the Latin American country has participated in CISMEF and its highlighted products include guitars for children, wine, and wool scarves.
Uruguay's economy is based on small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which are family-owned enterprises with a history of over 100 years. They have maintained close cooperative relations with enterprises in Guangdong, according to Martin Andres Alvez Lemos, consul general of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in Guangzhou.
From January to June 2019, 60 percent of Uruguay's meat exports to the world were shipped to China, with exports to Guangdong ranking first. The consul general said Uruguay took part in the 16th CISMEF to seek more cooperation opportunities with Chinese enterprises.
At present, many products from Uruguay can be purchased at the official flagship stores of e-commerce platform JD.com, and customers can buy wine and wool blankets from Uruguay without going abroad.
"The wool and yarn clothing exhibited in the stores were handmade by Uruguayan women living in the country," said the consul general.
