The total import and export value of Hainan's foreign trade reached 38.39 billion yuan ($5.58 billion) from January to May this year, a year-on-year increase of 45.6 percent, according to statistics from Haikou Customs.
More specifically, the export value stood at 13.71 billion yuan, up 53 percent, while the import value reached 24.68 billion yuan, increasing by 41.7 percent year-on-year.
From January to May, Hainan's imports and exports with Belt and Road countries totaled 13.81 billion yuan, an increase of 36.5 percent compared with the same period last year, accounting for 36 percent of the province's total foreign trade.
ASEAN is the largest trading partner of Hainan, with the import and export value between the province and ASEAN countries reaching 10.43 billion yuan, up 62.7 percent. Trade between Hainan and the United States stood at 8.1 billion yuan, up 40.2 percent. The import and export between Hainan and the EU hit 6.25 billion yuan, up 36.7 percent year-on-year.
